2. Flood

The biggest cause of floods is excessive rainfall. When an area receives continuous heavy rainfall, the soil loses its ability to absorb water and the excess water starts flowing on the surface. As a result, the water level of rivers and lakes rises, and they break their banks and spill water into the surrounding areas.

The situation caused by floods is extremely dangerous. Many people lose their lives, homes and crops due to being swept away by flood waters. Many efforts are made by the government and non-government organizations to help the flood victims. Relief camps are organized where people are provided with food, clothing and medical facilities. Apart from this, pumping stations are used to drain out the flood water and efforts are made to restore the supply of drinking water. However, despite these efforts, it may take a long time for the flood victims to return to normal life.
